They had some difficulty doing the biopsy seems his kidneys were not very easy to get at , the Dr. doing it had to get a surgeon to come and sort him out. Dont think Fred was very keen to be staying in all night. Must say I feel quite strange being here on my own. Had rung up from eye dept. while I was visiting Fred, maybe they are going to do the other op. on his eye quite soon. I rang back when I got home but was to late to catch the eye department. Bye for now L.M. xxxxxx

I'm back on chemotherapy medication - but NOT for cancer as such , but for my thrombocythaemia (a bone marrow problem affecting the platelets). (it's a pre-cancer, possibly related to previous chemo/radio) I'm taking hydroxycarbamide which is the same stuff given to people with chronic leukaemia. On day 7 now and feeling frankly stoned Anyway - this is a GOOD move because the threat of having a stroke or other kind of blood clotting event has been hanging over me for a couple of years now. It wasn't something that was easy to explain to people without sounding like a hypochondriac - so I'm delighted I've been allowed to have this treatment, which will be long term but acceptable. However it's disconcerted the family a little bit, even though I've tried to explain it is something that would happen eventually. I requested Taunton Hospital because I wanted to start afresh - and went to the Oncology/Haematology Unit last Wednesday. It's a brand new department that opened last year and it was absolutely lovely - the waiting area was like a large, spacious cafe - incredible place. The (woman) doctor was very nice and explained things thoroughly, took an interest in me, spoke to my husband. I go back in a month to see how it's working ... I've edited out my dream description, too lengthy! My leg bones and pelvis have been aching, but I suppose it's a sign that the drug is having an effect.

Thank you for your good wishes I returned to the hospital yesterday for an assessment of how the treatment is working, and apparently it's working a bit too quickly, so the dosage has been reduced, hooray (as the side effects were beginning to get me down but I didn't want to grumble). On the other hand, apparently the genetic testing they've done isn't conclusive and the actual results of my previous biopsy at Frenchay Hospital have got lost : : : So I have to go back to Taunton next Wednesday for a repeat bone marrow biopsy and they will also try to grab a tiny piece of bone at the same time. yuk, yuk and double yuk, but it will be good to know what is going on .... well actually I'd rather put my head in the sand but there we go, ha! Also having my spleen scanned on Monday at the local hospital, but that's pretty routine with blood problems, I gather.

Hope it is not too gruelling for you , Anne ... biopsies into your bone sound uncomfy at best, but it means your doc is being pro-active I suppose!

it's only momentary pain (you can't anaesthetize bone) - it's the anticipation which is nasty. I was lying on the bed with a bare backside, facing a blank wall, with a silent doctor and no sedation for 50 minutes last time ... it should have taken no more than 20. Anyway I've told the doc this story and she has reassured me.
I don't think it will be as bad as your dad's kidney biopsy. It must have been most unpleasant for you, Fred, and worrying for L.M. It's always a little un-nerving if the doctor in charge has to call in someone else to help.
Is there any date arranged for F's eye operation?

I've pondered putting this story in this thread & so here goes. It does seem quite common as you have said before & it has touched our family as I will explain.
Les, Craig's dad has been told he has pre-cancerous cells in the breast area. That is to say, after his tests, it is hoped the cells are only pre & that the operation will be the cure & the end of it all. He is going into Ward 105 on Wednesday 19th December. He will have the Sentinel lymph node removed & examined for possible cancer in other lymph nodes. He will also have breast tissue removed. It is quite rare for men to get breast cancer, but of-course it does happen.
Les did find a tiny lump the size of a pea by the nipple & it was quite tender when knocked. I think the shock & dismay he felt has turned into resignation to what is ahead.
Before the operation he has to have a radio-active injection the day before surgery & has been told not to be near children as the active rays can affect them.
Anyway, that is the story so far. I will let you all know how things go. Maybe I'll do that on the general thread. Not sure yet.

Hi Sue. Glad your mum's back & doing well. ....... Les had his operation today & says he feels fine. He has had some lymph nodes removed & the breast tissue. He also has a drain insitu. Anyway, he is having an overnight stay & should be back tomorrow.
We all feel relieved it is over for him. Don't know what the follow up is yet as the surgeon hasn't done a ward round so far so Les hasn't got any more info.
Hope that it is goodbye cancer but don't know yet.
