While someone I know is anaemic with iron loss I have been looking around at the iron issue .. wondering how we can boost our iron intake with food as well as with tablets. It is relevant to me as well, cos I don't eat much meat and the iron in veg is less easy to absorb than the iron in vegetable sources. This looks like a good link for iron issues in general: It's American, but what the heck! Iron issues/ Supplements

Seems the best source of iron is chicken livers, spiked with lemon juice to aid absorbtion (vitamin C increases accessibility of iron)
Oatmeal is another good source, so that with a bowl of berries for the vitamin C thing would be good. Lentils, beans like kidney beans, butter beans and soya beans are good sources too, as is spinach.
Also note that tannin block iron absorbtion, so if you are trying to get more iron into your body cut back on tea and coffee, especially at meal times.
It also says on this site that anaemia can impact your ability to fight infection.

You cannot always get chicken liver, which is odd considerning how many chickens are cut up into portions these days, bet they throw the livers away! I remember making a nice pate with them in the past ..... this sounds an easy recipe, but read the comments if you are going to try it: allrecipes.com/recipe/chicken-liver-pate/

Tried to get chicken livers yesterday without any success. Also tesco had run out of beetroot juice. Got the wild mushroom soup will try that at lunch tomorrow. The frozen fruits were good I made up 7 servings out of one packet, much better really as the fresh ones go off so quick. Bye for now L.M. xxxxx

Just to say I am on iron tablets now + multivitamins. The reason is that when I last went to donate blood I failed the iron test we all have to have on arrival. I would never have known otherwise as it isn't routine to have a blood test.
Craig was OK & he donated, but I was told not to. Obviously I was still offered a drink & biscuits.
Anyway, any hints on the subject of iron is welcome.i.e. not including meat or animal products.

Hi Pauline, having been very aneamic these last few months i may be able to say what is a good remedy I took beetroot juice just a small glass, the dosage is on the carton. Add a small squeeze of lemon juice out of a bottle. The juice helps the iron to absorb along with no tea or coffee. I just drank boiled water I didnt like the water at first, but Im O.K.with it now. You can get the beetroot juice from Tesco, nearly 3pound a carton. I have just taken my last iron tablet but am going to keep taking the B. juice. Bye L.M. xxxxxxx

Just nipped to get the washing out of the dryer it almost dried on the line so I just finished it off with a few mins in the drier. Bye for now Pauline xxxxx

Are you talking about bottles of organic beetroot juice? Sainsburys sell it. Sad to report they seem to have stopped selling Clearspring Japanese Sencha green tea in any form.
