In Foods To Fight Cancer Prof Beliveau and Dr Gingas have 11 chapters on foods they call nutraceuticals: foods which are specifically good at targetting cancer. I'm going to do a little thread on each one which sums up the value of the particular food or food group and then where we can add our own comments or recipes etc for each one.

BerriesThe active ingredient in raspberries is concentrated in the seeds, so try to chew them. Or choose strawberries cos the active ingredient is mainly in the pulp of them! In the lab berries are looking good in fighting colon cancer .. so get stuck in! Summary page 125 1. Most berries contain an exceptionally abundant source of several polyphenols with anti-cancer potential both to eliminate carcinogens and inhibit angiogenesis. Some of the phytochemicals promote apoptosis too. ( glossary-clicky!)2. Eating cranberries is better than drinking juice (usually has sugar added) 3. Freezing does not damage the anti-cancer molecules, so use frozen berries when fresh are not available.

I eat raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries every morning with either oatmeal or museli and use soya milk. Pomegranite is also good and I eat them and drink the juice. Not berries I know.

I think this sort of breakfast is where we get the feeling that this is an expensive diet from .. these fruits are not cheap, are they!
BUT if you dont eat meat, or even ready made foods from sainsbos I'm not sure it is any dearer than a "normal" western diet .. tbh I never do the maths!
I love berries!

I have just melted some dark chocolate that has an aroma of oranges in is and used this to dip in strawberries, will let you know how this works out, we have a dinner guest tonight, but I have never tried this b4, seems some greaseproof or waxed paper would have been an advantage at the outset!
haha!
edit to add, it worked really well .... you do have to make sure the fruit is really dry, but yum, a great end to a good dinner.

Our raspberry canes did really well last year, so fingers crossed that we can get another good yield this year ..
the canes look good, but it is all about the flowers staying on, I suppose.
Just to say that frozen berries are often higher in nutrient than ones in the shop, as they get frozen quickly and this preserves their vitamins .. and they are cheaper too .. B just got bags with a 1lb weight in them for £1 cash in the Farm Food shop - on offer as well to get three from the price of two, which is amazing ... good way to get a range of different berries in your bowel!
