In Foods To Fight Cancer Prof Beliveau and Dr Gingas have 11 chapters on foods they call nutraceuticals: foods which are specifically good at targetting cancer. I'm going to do a little thread on each one which sums up the value of the particular food or food group and then where we can add our own comments or recipes etc for each one.

Tomatoes There's been a lot in the news about how tomaotes can fight cancer, in particular very useful for fighting prostrate cancer.
The active ingredient in called lycopene. Although the reserach has mainly been into prostrate cancer it seems that tomatoes could play a more general role in preventing other cancers, since the mechanisms responsible for the development of various cancers are similar. Lycopene disturbs the growth of cell tissues.
Summary 1. Lycopene, a phytocehmical, is the compound that makes tomatoes bright red and gives them anti-cancer properties.
2. Lycopene's activity is maximised by cooking, and the presence of vegetable fats, so whizzing up a quick sauce with olive oil and garlic is going to be very good.
3. If you're a bloke you really should eat this at leat twice a week.

We eat lots of tomatoes fried, or cold in salads, I also have a banana every day and yesterday I read that they are good for combating cancer,I reckon that could be so because my Mum ate one every day and she was 94 when she died.

Bananas are very good for you, I agree - they are supposed to be good for keeping blood pressure under control.
I've heard about lycopene surviving long cooking - it's my excuse for using lots of ketchup - but that tomato sauce you mention is very good.

Tomatoes and carrots are both better cooked, from the point of view of accessing the vital nutreints, according to B --- who reads a lot of stuff about nutrition!
Bananas are a great food .. I agree too!

btw mum, tomatoes are especially good as protection against prostate cancer, so all the more reason to feed dad up on lots of cooked tomatoes! (perhaps skipping the bacon and cheese!)

Grilled tomatoes on wholewheat toast with a dash of Worcester sauce are certainly one of my favourite small meals.

Good news about tomatoes. I love them. I usually eat them fresh on salad. I must try cooking them I think.
I'm afraid my son doesn't like real (as I call them) tomatoes. I think he sometimes use ketchup. Maybe I can hide a cooked tomato in a sauce?

Tomatoes. Try them with a small pat of butter in a frying pan, they must be sliced not whole. You can take the skins out while they cook if you like. Leave on a low heat, now grill some bacon, on one side, turn it over and add a few slices of hard cheese, if you are lucky enough to have some oatcakes, you are well away, if not a couple of slices of bread will do. Bye the way dont forget to cook the other side of the B. and C. Then add the Toms.
