Gosh I didn't get as far as thinking of ginger harvests - I just enjoy seeing plants grow, and when it's species like ginger or mango, well it's always a miracle! I'll pop it into some compost and see what happens.
I'm glad the orchid is growing, munndad, if it's got leaves then it will be making food for itself ... with any luck a flowers will shoot out like triffids next year!

We lost the choisya in the snow it looks very sad, split at the base of the trunk and lying across the garden. I loved it as it was one of the things that had a second flowering and, occasionally, even a third if the autumn was mild. I suppose the positive is that now we can spend time looking for something to replace it.

Anne, do you have any gardening space at you new home, or are you doing it all as a volunteer elsewhere now?
B just bought two little Christmas trees for us, which are propogated from the local forest by a a bloke in a garden centre near here .. he says most of the trees sold in the forest at this time of year are actually bought in from elsewhere but he goes and gets cuttings to propogate them properly and he is very pleased with himself and the trees!

ooops - just seen this. No garden here unfortunately .. I've been volunteer gardening at the local Museum, and enjoy it. They need someone to take over the management of the whole area but that needs someone who is really keen to take on the responsibility of planning, accounting etc as well as the general donkey work. This week I've been pruning roses and clearing magnolia leaves away from the flower beds - they are so thick they are stopping the spring bulbs from appearing.

Hi Anne, how are you. Seems like so much stuff was coming out early last week now the frosts played havoc with my roses. The thing with nature it seems to be able to bounce back and everything makes a fresh start, well lets hope so. I think those leaves can protect the young shoots from the frost, but like you say if there are to many they are heavy and stunt the new shoots, you are never sure whats the best thing to do. Bye for now L.M. xxxxxx

oh yes, certainly mn'd, it's six of one and half etc ... no tender shoots in this bed though - I've been uncovering the snowdrops and crocuses.
Incidentally, I think this cold snap is good for the gardens, and for the farmers, it will kill off all the lurking bugs that could cause diseases later on. However, as you say, it doesn't help having a warm spell beforehand. Hopefully the roses will be ok ..

I went out to see a snowdrop walk last weekend, I love that, there are two within easy reach of here. ..
Our garden looks a bit snowcovered today .. but I don't think it will do any harm ..

With me not being much of a Percy Thrower, most of my gardenings a bit of hit and miss. We have got some nice snowdrops out at the front, and alot of daffodils well up, but these more or less look after themselves. The suns out so the garden is looking summerish and I must say its warm in the sun. Hope Bs sister made it back home O.K. its still rather snowy to the East. Bye for now L.M. xxxxx

Susan do you remember that orchid you gave me two years ago, it didnt do to well last year, its now growing quite big almost jumping out of the pot. I think someone told me they dont like a change of pot so Im leaving it for the time being. That ponsetta you gave me for my Birthday this year is so tall I keep thinking it one of Jacks beans in the fairy story. Bye for now L.M. xxxxxxx

Mum, you must be a bit of a Percy Thrower, to be still keeping those pot plants .. I wold have ditched them by now ... !
There is a lot of weeding to do here, there is stuff growing in all the cracks of the paving ... such a big job, but I have bought a really good gadget that helps .. you can use it standing up, sort of like a stiff wire brush on stave .. which makes it less back breaking ...
doubt I will be venturing out there until it is a bit warmer, though!

So what is coming up in your gardens now? Our purple iris bulbs are all flowering in the tub. The rosemary bushes have flowers on them down here too!

Anne we have lots of things popping their heads up but Im not able to name much, other than my baby daffodils have all come out this morning. I did manage to get a bit of the garden tidied up on Sunday, so its not looking to bad. The main trouble now is not having the car to take the garden stuff to the tip. Hope all goes well for you when you get your hospital results Anne. Bye for now L.M. xxxxx

I love baby daffodils!
thanks for your good wishes - I have the biopsy tomorrow but it takes at least two weeks to do the genetic testing - so it will be three weeks to wait, which is ok by me.
I hope F has a date for his eye operation?
