Grown Ups... yes Karen, I saw it too. Not great, but really you should know what to expect with Adam Sandler involved. The Wedding Singer had a few OK moments, but really this guy only appears in very lame efforts. He should make one called Lowest Common Denominator.

"Brooklyns Finest" - bit like the TV series "the wire", if you enjoyed that you'll enjoy this, follows the lives of three different police officers who have little in common and no real overlap in story beyond location
"The Other Guys" - action comedy, bit short on both, meh

Drive Angry - NOT for children, once you get past the bad language, nudity, s*x and graphic violence it's quite enjoyable in a dark way, not one you want to show your mum when she pops over for a visit though

ha ha Karen, reckon I'm a bit of a sucker for some flimsy films too. My comments about Adam Sandler were based on extensive research.

(((( mark )))) you have my sympathies I too have sat through several Adam Sandler movies in the faint hope that one of them would be worth watching
I saw (some of) "Due Date" at the weekend thinking it would be along the lines of "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" it lasted 30 minutes in the player before we decided we weren't going to crack a smile let alone a laugh, P, T & A it wasn't, I have a lot of time for Steve Martin though

The Runaways - a biopic of the first all girl rock band The Runaways, which was the band Joan Jett started before the Blackhearts, based in 1975 it details the toll it took on Cherie Curry the lead singer, based on the book by Cherie and produced by Joan Jett who advised on the music quite interesting, sometimes fun, sometimes tragic, but that's rock and roll and the movie doesn't shirk from showing the downside.
Battle Los Angeles - this follows one troop of marines as they fight an alien invasion in the streets of LA, reminded me of the beach landing scenes in Saving Private Ryan in parts, Black Hawk Down in others as it was shot in an almost documentary style
not as "gung ho"/"yes sir mister president sir" as I expected, I quite enjoyed it, the creature effects made the alien encounters very believable which is odd for a scifi/war movie, you could actually believe that a real battle was being fought at times

had a bit of a film fest this weekend
Mars Needs Moms - an entertaining disney animation shot using live action motion capture so the characters are extremely realistic in their movements, the usual family values stuff you expect from the big D, basically the martians need a mother to raise their kids so they pinch one of ours
Source Code - interesting idea, exploring alternate realities and time travel through the memories of the main character as he tries to avert a disaster that's going to happen by re experiencing one that already has, bit like a cross between Inception and the TV series Seven Days, if anyone remembers that one, I enjoyed this one a lot
Takers - A bunch of crooks plan and execute robberies that are extremely technically difficult, and a bunch of cops try and stop them, above average cops and robbers film, bit formulaic in parts, worth a watch
Law Abiding Citizen - I'd heard a lot about this and was prepared for some really nasty things to happen, thankfully they were implied rather than on screen, it was still pretty nasty in places though.
the real bad guys lost all their sympathy from me in the first few minutes of the movie and I completely understand why the main character did what he did, I don't approve of it but I understand it given the motivation.
this highlights several of the problems in the american justice system where evidence can be excluded, deals made where the guilty go free and lawyers measure success by conviction rates refusing to fight cases where they think they may lose.
it also shows what might happen if the bad guys pick on a cia "problem solver"
another excellent movie

Rango - animation with Johnny Depp providing the voice of a chameleon in an old west town populated by the creatures of the desert, fun in places but it didn't really leap out at me despite the obvious "oh it's been shot in 3D we're going to throw things at the audience" bits, not really adult enough for adults and not really fun enough for kids and teenagers will probably be texting all the way through, not actually bad but slightly dissapointing in my opinion

Unthinkable - Samuel L Jackson, Carrie Moss, Michael Sheen I found this an extremely uncomfortable film to watch, it examines the use of torture in extracting information and gets pretty graphic at times, Michael Sheen's character places several nuclear bombs around the USA and then allows himself to be captured, the film then details the atrocities indulged in order to prevent other atrocities, poses some very hard questions and is not an easy film to watch, if I had known I probably wouldn't have watched it, definitely not one for the faint of heart
Nowhere Boy - Biopic dramatisation of the early years of John Lennon, explores his relationship with his mother and aunt and show how he was introduced to music by his mother, sometimes painful, sometimes fun, parts of it reminded me of my own family life when I was younger (yes I am of an age when these things still happened), excellent film

I have hardly been to the cinema this year, hence no comments. We traipsed along to the final installment of Harry Potter's schooldays. That was OK, didn't bother with the 3D option.

I have a lovefilm subscription, I mainly use it to keep up with TV series that I like that have been bought by sky, so I'll never see them
my personal thoughts on 3D are that it's a gimmick and the film suffers because the producers rely on 3D instead of spending the money on a decent script
as soon as any 3D object touches the edge of the screen the 3D effect is destroyed, which can be very jarring if you've just watched a 3D character walk across the screen and suddenly they go flat at the edge, so the movie has to be framed specifically for 3D which dictates some of the shots the director can take and so limits the movie
they try to make up for this by having things fly out at the audience, but once the novelty wears off you start looking for other things like script, plot and acting and find they've all suffered
they seem to forget that the unless a person is dealing with objects that are physically close, say within 5 metres then the majority of the time the eye focusses at infinity and there is little depth to perceive in what we see anyway, so we don't lose that much looking at a 2D image
adding the extra D is an expensive waste of time and the sooner this fad dies the better imo
plus having seen one of the later 3D movies I can attest that
a) the glasses are just as intrusive and dorky as they ever were and people who wear their own glasses still have problems with them
and
b) the headaches I get are just as vivid, painful and distracting as they have always been
no 3D for me thanks

Hi L.M.
I've just been to the dentist on my motorbike, I don't know which was worse, going to the dentist in the first place or riding a motorbike in this wind
