3D is definitely being used as a gimmick. I quite like the general effect, to my eyes it adds more realism, but agree this is lost when the film is a brainless animation or full of stuff exploding out of the screen. Which sums up most of the 3D output so far. The specs are awkward, couldn't wear them long.

oh that is a classic, haven't seen that for ages
The Day The Earth Stood Still - I was quite prepared to hate this one as I absolutely adored Michael Rennie in the original, but I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn't a frame for frame remake but it still managed to capture the spirit of the original
there's a slightly different message and it's aimed at the current generation rather than having the 50's mindset of the original, which was aimed at the current generation of the day, so it's been brought up to date
Keanu Reeves does a good job as Klaatu projecting an eerie stillness that gives the impression that he's not 100% sure what is going on but he has to make a judgement based on it anyway so he really focusses
very underrated movie I'd say

I've always enjoyed Margaret Rutherford. What a face.
The original of The Day The Earth Stood Still was one I liked. Don't imagine it cost a lot, but it works. I am keen to see the remake now I've read Karen's enthusiastic review.

I remember Michael Rennie, he really was good wasn't he?
I enjoy vintage films; also radio, especially Charles Chilton's Journey into Space series, and Paul Temple.
Not a film, but a Radio reading (on Extra, previously BBC7) - Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Putting it on my reading list.

Anne, I need to find that Androids thing you mention. No doubt you know it is supposedly the basis for Blade Runner, which is a good film. Might be a tiny bit dated now.

Michael Rennie is just gorgeous to look at, and he can act as well
I wouldn't say Blade Runner was dated, it's still a futuristic world and the movie is a classic
Philip K Dick has had several of his novels and stories turned into movies
A Scanner Darkly - became an animation of the same name with Keanu Reeves - there he is again Total Recall was based on We Can Remember It For You Wholesale Minority Report - based on a short story Paycheck with ben affleck is one of his
and several others that totally escape me

Dick's big then? Hadn't realised just how influential. Blade Runner is high in my list of favourites. Life is precious, that's its message.

IMDb gives 8 out of 10 to the original version of the Day the Earth Stood Still, the remake only gets 5.5

well you don't have to watch it I'm not going to twist your arm I enjoyed it though despite reading lots of reviews and not really fancying it as remakes are never better than the originals, it was a lot better than I thought it would be

IMDb is usually quite dependable, though you have to be aware that even the 'best' films get 9 out of 10. Nothing gets a 10. I haven't looked, but can guess nothing gets a zero. But tastes vary, hence so many films. And I like sci-fi, so will definitely be looking out for the remake in question. Thought I'd seen it advertised for this Tuesday, not sure which channel.

Went to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy at the pictures yesterday. It was quite good, but I wouldn't rave about it ... too much dense plot but not really any relationships, or characters to empathise with or care about, which leaves it a bit lacking in my book!
