Great idea Sam --- I hope it works for you, and also that using this space can help you ...
I certainly slowed down my rate of eating, and agree with putting cutlery down .. it also helps if you eat crunchy stuff that takes longer to eat .. notice how QUIKCLY you can scoff down reallly high calorie foods? deadly!
I am struggling to eat my usual fare this week, due to hole in mouth where tooth used to be, so it's all soft stuff .. but sticking to veg soups and fruit pureed with yogurt!

Very good advice Sam; I'm an emotional eater, definitely, especially last thing at night and of course that doesn't help quality of sleep either.
suze - I have a book of soup recipes somewhere, and it includes some fruit soups. Remind me to post the recipes if I forget ..

I have read some good books about the psychology of dieting over the years, I think my whole success or otherwise of any given diet plan always depends on getting my head right
after all, I know all about how to do it in a mechanical way, I've done it enough times, very successfully, but that knowledge is not enough on its own ... getting going and making it stick needs a mental set .. for sure!

I'm wondering if it is because you are becoming more muscular, it seems you have been clocking up plenty of miles on your bike. Very good to hear, and I reckon you will be in shape to climb up Mont Ventoux.

maybe, there is always that notion that muscle weighs more! but it is not as obvious as the number on the scales!
I haven't doen much climbing yet ... even the smallest inclinesleave me a bit breathless atm, so there is a lot of training to do in the next few weeks! I will do ventoux, though, even if it take me all day with rests every ten minutes!

See, that's the sort of positivism that cheers me up. (Feeling a bit glum today, no idea why). I've been relatively good all week. I'm 100% with you on 'getting your head right’ – I bet the people that know the most about what not to eat are the ones that go ahead and eat the wrong things anyway. Which to me suggests its all about getting your head right. For me, this only comes with exercise. When I’m active, I have more energy, and when I have more energy I’m motivated to eat healthily… and enjoy doing it. When I’m inactive, I lack energy to do anything and end up binging. All I can say is BRING ON THE HOLIDAYS SO I CAN GET BACK ON MY BIKE! It’s gotten serious now. I thought I was massively overweight at 11stone9. I’m now packing a fair few more pounds and it’s getting me down. Actually, I found a really useful website the other week where you can input your weight and a few other variables to give you an indication of how many calories you will burn doing a particular exercise: www.prohealth.com/weightloss/tools/exercise/calculator1_2.cfmIf everybody promises not to use algebra to work out my weight from the results I’m about to give you… LOL… cycling to and from uni in September will mean that I burn off approx 1,800 calories per day. Obviously I wont be able to do that from straight off as I’ve barely been on my bike this year, but even an hour is about 1000 calories. And it’s blummin’ hilly my neck of the woods, so maybe even more. Activity: Bicycling, 10-11.9mph, light effort Time (mins): 180 Calories: 1,828.92 Now this motivates me!

That's really interesting sam ...
I hope you can get your head right .. tis certainly the be all and end all for me, and I guess the cancer thing ought to be a motivator but it is amazing how you can still under-mine your basic best-ionterests when faced with food!

Isn't it! I'm doing some cognitive-behavioural therapy on myself and am keeping a food diary. Not so much what I eat, but the thoughts, feelings and emotions before and after I eat. There has to be a way to unlearn my unhealthy over-eating behaviour!

I didn't lose anything last week, haven't been dieting properly at all but I'm eating healthy food and walking a lot every day. I've kept a food diary before and found it useful, discovered I snack when I'm feeling angry or frustrated about something, and also late at night.
Today I've eaten a fishfinger sandwich in wholewheat bread, hummus, assorted salads with bread and mushrooms with bacon on toast, 2 satsumas, then toast and cheese .. better stop now...

It's interesting in that calorie thing how much the calories go up if you increase the effort level of cycling from 10 miles and hour to 13 miles an hour .. which is relevant for me when cycling the canal
tho in generla when I'm out I think actually speed is not the main thing .. how many hills you climb is the main tning!
