No need for anyone to be stuck on a clue now, we can all help each other.
And if anyone has any good brainteasers, this would be the place to share them.

Good thread. I've recently started having a go at cryptic crosswords and sometimes I get an obviously correct answer but don't understand why! Can anyone explain this one ..
Clue: speculation after son's dismissed? His crime? (12)
Answer: embezzlement
now I understand cryptic clues always have the 'straightforward' answer hidden in them somewhere, as well as the cryptic bit which could be an anagram, or a pun, etc. The straightforward answer was obviously embezzlement because it has 12 letters, I had the L, (and I'm afraid I looked up types of crime ..).
Can anyone explain the cryptic part 'speculation after son's dismissed' ?

How about
Clue: Change flag when heading off (5)
Answer: Alter
so how does the word 'flag' come into it?

Heading off just means drop the initial letter, so FALTER (ie to flag) becomes ALTER
Still working on embezzlement.

Finally! It is EMBEZZLEMENT because the abbreviation for son is s. Speculation without the (dismissed) s becomes peculation, meaning embezzlement.

karen, I quite like your crossword solving website, it does't really help solve cryptic clues, but can help narrow the options once you've made a start. Pretty good.

You know what when I try the cryptics with you Mark the answers seem to come easy, but doing them on my own Im a dead loss. I just stick to more simple stuff. Pleased Luke is feeling better, I did ring him up yesterday he probably had his ear phones on, and didnt hear the phone.

Thanks Mark, I've never heard the word peculation before! Thankyou very much for the 'heading off' tip too.
New Everyman tomorrow then - must remember to buy a newspaper ..

I sometimes do those logic puzzles, if you mean the ones you can fill in a 5 square grid to do?

Mum, you mentioned puzzles, want any help?
Anne I used to do loads of those logic puzzles, think I overdid them so stopped, but the process of elimination is fun. You have to notice every word of the accompanying account don't you?
Susan, your sudoku isn't much of a party game, but you could always put a photo of the grid on here!
ps hope Brigid had a great weekend. x
