I like the logic puzzles, although they can be a little frustrating and irritating sometimes. ok I've just torn out today's Everyman crossword and have managed one clue so far ... I think ..
Clue: incomplete drawing by unknown character (7)
Answer: Cartoon - presumably because that is an incomplete drawing ... or am I too literal here?
I like the cat flap clue! (and thanks, heh)

drawing = sketch unknown character (in algebra ) = x or y, y in this case. sketch + y = sketchy, meaning incomplete.

no indeed suduko is not a party game, it is a bit of an extension on the logic problem idea, though, and tbh I never fail to finish one, so it is a bit of an exercise rather than a real challenge . .
mum is too busy hopping on and off buses around the coastline to be doing puzzles .. dad has been texting me today!

Bus hopping around the coast? It has to be Spring! ;D
I have to admit I don't really like sudukos, and eventually I simply want to fill random numbers in the spaces ..
The Everyman - afraid it's beaten me this week. I'm guessing
Clue@ Block Somerset's foremost spinner (4) is 'Mere'? There is a village near here called Mere..
..So-mer(s)e- set (the 'foremost spinner' being the letter 's' - although where foremost comes into I don't know ..)

Hi ,Mark this thread brings back memories of you doing crosswords / cryptic and logic puzzles you did lode's of them , you and your mum had a thing for them and I see you both still have.
I keep supplying the odd word, not very often I must say, It looks like being popular.
Sue will text some more , only I thought you had a lots of company/work set to do so didn't send any today. LOL dad xxxx

Anne, sometimes the solution is not so complicated. What is Somerset's foremost (letter)? It's S. And a spinner is a top. The straight clue is 'Block' and so the solution is S + top. STOP.
Dad, you are right about how many puzzles I've done. It's really a bit of a knack that gets easier the more you practice. Maybe I should start compiling them, wonder if there's any money in it! I remember doing all the puzzles with Mum, it was quality time together.
One thing I have found is that the cryptic clues in local rags can be a bit crummy, so I stick to the broadsheets. Even there some compilers are a lot more accessible than others. Sometimes I just can't get started, but suppose that may be due to other factors. Sudokus are OK, but there isn't as much satisfaction in completing them as there is in a good crossword. The most pointless puzzle of all is those time wasting word searches. Really, what is the point of them?
Anne, if you are really stuck then here are some more solutions to the Everyman.. don't read on if you don't want to know!
I thought the hardest clue this week was: 'Heavenly girl seen round about, heading for arcade'. (8) The solution is ETHEREAL. But can you explain the clue? Well, Ethereal means heavenly, of course. The 'heading' of arcade is the initial letter a. And 'about' means re. The 'girl' is Ethel. Put Ethel 'round' re + a, and there's your answer.
The other solutions were: urban, clearing house, in a spot, lioness, Genesis, radical, catchment area, Aries, cribbage, toggery, alto, ring, chart, stick at nothing, theme, posthaste, Pierrot, colonel, retsina, touch wood, robot, labour exchange, pence and silo. See if you can work the clues out from the solutions, that can still be fun. Quite a few were anagrams this week.

Gosh this crossword lark has always seemed beyond me. I've looked at one once & avoided them like the plague. As I read the posts on here I see that you need to think in a certain way but I reckon it is something learned like everything else.
I disagree with Mark about word-search being pointless, except if it is so easy to the point of boredom. But it is better than nothing if you are stuck in a waiting room. Or they can be used as a brain warmer, ready for more tasking things.
Sudoko isn't about maths but logic & spacial awareness I think. And I have to admit the hard level is quite tasking, for me at least.
Talking about making your own puzzles is a good idea though Mark. And it is a good extension to the game.
What I did as a game t'other week was set out numbers 1 to 9 like sudoku & gave the first 9 letters of alphabet instead to see how many real words I could make from a done puzzle. The trouble with that is that it leave out too many letters of the alphabet, so it is restricted. But one could jumble up letters & not stick to the first 9 of the alphabet. So you can make new games from old by just playing about I guess.
Anyway, I haven't posted on this thread before as I only do the easy stuff, but I have read the other posts & it is a good thread.

yes, mark, I believe there is money in it, but like all creative things, the main challenge would be to find an opening x

Thanks Mark - yes, 'stop' fits in better than Mere - this makes sense - I'm learning a lot in this thread
Ethereal too - much more sense than my 'arcangel' which I realised later was not spelled properly - but 'archangel' summons up an image of Gabriel winking flirtatiously, in an arch manner ..
I am trying ever so hard not to look at your other answers, but thankyou!
Pauline - that is a much better way of playing suduko, much more interesting!

Ah gups, i think you should look at his answers, I am sure you will learn more by trying to match the two halves at this point in your learnign curve by working out how those answers come from the clues, esp as you actually have to match them first anyway .. not quite the same as just looking at the answers!

you are probably right, suze, working out how they are worked out would be very helpful to me

Anne, happy to advise on any solutions that don't make any sense.
Sorry if I was too harsh on word searches, I do them sometimes even though they aren't exactly a challenge.. actually, some of the cryptic clues can be a bit like mini word searches, the solution is embedded in the clue. They are the easy ones.
Mum and Dad, remember we were manic about playing Scrabble? Still play that with Tracy sometimes.
Anne, I liked your Arch angel.

Word search drive me crackers, I dont mind the odd one but I like a bit more of a challenge. Liked Suduko when it first came out then went off it, but this last couple of weeks I have taken to doing it again. Yes the Scrabble was a good game we dont play it now. Test myself with Countdown trying to beat the contestants. Just plain straight forward crosswords are my favorite, mind some of the compilers are a bit way out with their clues sometimes. The one doing our local paper at the moment is weird.
