Anne, I might have overcomplicated the light puzzle. Wasn't sure we knew the on or off position of the switches.
Did you solve the other crossword clue?

Mark I'm afraid I turned several crosswords into a collage in my sketchbook - not sure what I'm going to with it next, paint and draw on it perhaps.
ok back to finishing crosswords - here is a clue I got right but not sure why ..
Get to stretch between bends (5) - REACH

Hi Anne, well get to means reach, and a reach is the straight section of a river or canal. ie the bit between the bends.
Did you fathom your hotel /entertaining girls clue? It stumped me. I kept coming up with geishas, but couldn't explain why!

glasses ....?
Hotel is part of the phonetic alphabet, comes after Golf; lasses = girls ... something along those lines perhaps?

Anne, thought of that too, but still not seeing it. What was the 'blockade' all about?

well I wondered if the H was blockading the G? Yes, it's a bit thin, isn't it, Unfortunately I don't have the answer as I really did cut the crosswords up and stick them in my sketchbook ... However I've had a happy time downloading and printing the Guardian crossword. LDO cocktail? (3-9) is .... Old-Fashioned - I know this is the name of a cocktail and that LDO is an anagram of Old - but I'm sure I must be missing some other reason why this is the correct answer? Listen to Pluto in torment from Illness (5,7) = heart disease. How does Pluto come into it apart from containing a letter t?

Guardian crosswords are my favourites.
I liked the economy of the 'old fashioned' clue. LDO is old 'fashioned'. Simple as that. 'Cocktail' meaning a mixture or, in this case, an anagram.
Still pondering Pluto.

Ahhh, an 'overworked postman' thread. I do love a cryptic crossword. I'm a Saturday Telegraph girl though.

Overworked postman meaning mixed up letters. Funny. Especially to an overworked postman like me. Any of the broadsheet crosswords are fine.
