Word searches drive me crackers too, no challenge at all.
almost ready for the Sunday Everyman. Thanks for the clues Mark, I did what you suggeted and worked out where they all went. I achieved quite a few on my own, colonel, cribbage, alto, retsina .. ..
how does ..
Better golf club, hopefully (5,4) become - touch wood? I can see the straightforward part, and I know that a wood is another word for golf club - but why is it 'better'?

The golf club clue was a bit odd. The only sense I could make of it was to see 'Better' as a gambler. Gamblers/betters are saps who give their money away easily, which is another definition of a 'touch'. Maybe not the best clue.

I suppose touching a sap could for money could also mean you get the 'better' of them?!

Don't you touch wood when you say something you are not sure of, a sort of bet?

Blimey you can tell I'm in a rush!
Word searches and sudokus could be played against the clock, that might give them a bit more excitement.

Susan, yeah it's definitely something to do with that.

Off to play footy again, hope I don't keep touching the wood (work) there!

Yes, 'better' in the sense of gambler - and touching wood in the superstitious sense is a bit of a gamble .. ah well onwards, don't look if you haven't done it yet Mark .. . . . . .
. averse, freehouse, heron, charlotte, refresher, felon, fedora, Horatio, Bethlehem, tenner, stiff, neutral task force and (possibly) sword, beat the retreat, keep your chin up, Everest

There is an answer that should be "pardon my French" but doesn't fit in because because the 's' of task force and the 'c' of chin get in the way ..
also
"Division of British farm that's large".. must surely be an anagram of 'hectare', (edit:or include 'acre' perhaps)but since the last but one letter is a 'C' the answer can only be 'reteach' - but how does that fit in?

I thought of 'pardon', but in this case it is 'Excuse my French'
And it's B + ranch for the division. B for British. Ranch for big farm.
Your 'keep your chin up' is actually 'keep one's chin up', but you clearly knew that based on your other solutions.
Anyway, seems you are really getting the hang of these things. Good, I was hoping somebody could occasionally help me!
Haven't quite finished, the bottom left corner is a bit tricky. Didn't get Charlotte, so thanks for that. Didn't know it was a kind of baked desert. Just need 14 and 23 across plus 15 down. Any ideas?
OK here are some others: askew, easing, wield, Norma.

Anne, did you get Brief Encounter for the 'Picture lawyer at meeting' (5,9), clue?
OK anybody: What is 'Old man returning by ferry in suit.' (5) ? First letter is A, last is Y.
Also, 'Plain English used after couple's arrested right one' (8) Third letter is A, fifth is R.

Yup, I got Branch in the end, with ranch, as you say Mark ... but I didn't work out the 'ones' instead of 'your' chin up .. so thanks for that! As you can gather - I haven't got the
Clue: Second's repartee in lively argument (9) yet
Thanks for the Picture Lawyer at meeting answer - that's helpful - I did think of 'Brief' but couldn't go further. Also for the 'excuse' rather than 'Pardon'.
No I haven't got the old man in a suit yet - did wonder about 'Arran' but can't make it all fit .. edit to say I've just seen the last letter is Y ..

S = second Wordplay = repartee S + wordplay = Swordplay = the 'lively argument'

Thanks Mark - ..
Old man clue - something to do with the Old Man of Hoy perhaps, (which is best visible from the ferry according to Wickipedia)
