Your decorations look good on that windowsill I bet if some snow was on the trees out side it would be magical. Marks just rung up to say happy birthday. Going to hang washing out now so Bye for now L.M. xxxxxxx Suns just come out.

Today I had a course on Equality and Diversity at work. The trainer didn't like the use of 'straight' as opposed to gay, and advised us to use 'heterosexual'. The opposite of straight is 'bent', which has negative connotations. Any thoughts on this?

Words are not fixed, fashions come and go, ppl reclaim and rename all the time, but if ppl want to be offensive, they will find ways to do it, and if ppl want to take offence, the same! Tone, context and intention are always more important than the actual words ..
I'm a lesbian, that's a fact, someone shouting it in my face with his fist raised is intending more than a mere observation ...
Heterosexual is a word you never hear used outside of text books, is it? Straight is what all my gay mates use about you lot (breeders would be the non pc thing to call you) if we say straight we are not worried about the OPPOSITE of that, so why should anyone else be worried .. . First I've heard of having to worry about opposites of the word you are using!
Anyway a lot my mates are happy to be bent, LOL

Gosh you are up well into the night Susan, just noticed your time. Come to think of it we were in bed reading quite late last night. Dads still in bed,8-45. I have had my cereal, didnt not make a cup of tea Im now convinced that the tea is contaminated, as when we opened the new packet thats when the tummy problem started. We have also noticed a very peculiar taste when drinking it may take it back to Tesco to see what they think about it.. Looks like being a dry day today not sunny but the sky isnt heavy clouds. Bye for now L.M.xxxxxxx

Hello all. Well I'm back after an unexpected stay in hospital. I visited my g.p. Mon., t-time & asked him to look at my old wound site where the swelling was & he insisted I went straight up to the assessment & surgery unit where I was admitted. After x-rays, tests & a scan today I have been told that it seems unlikely to be another hernia, & the bowel seems ok. I have a build up of fluid which may settle, but if not it can be drained at a later date. So I came back today. Not been home since Monday. Catch up time. ................. About the question Mark asked regarding terminology being offensive or otherwise, it is a hard one to answer really. Some words will offend one person & not another. Then words change their meaning or emphasis also. Fashion, fashion! IN the old days it was normal to call a black person a nigger. But now it is an insult seemingly. So the antique children's books of 'little black Sambo' & 'golly' (on the jar) is obsolete. I guess there is a 'gayspeak lingo' a 'drugs lingo' a 'gangland lingo' & all sorts of terminology which you learn when you join certain groups. At the end of the day, people generally know the context of what you mean by your body language, voice tone etc. I must admit it can happen that a person may be insulted by misinterpretation. The key may be to be careful what you say to strangers & always be ready to apologize & explain what you mean. I just think of myself as a humanoid.

Pauline I bet you are pleased to be home, what a carry on, I reckon they let people home to soon after any type of surgery , then complications arise. Hope all goes well for you now. We went to Tesco they refunded the money off the tea and said the tea company would test it. Having salmon and veg for tea, hope Dad enjoys it.I think it feels a bit cooler tonight its just gone 5-15. Bye for now L.M. xxxxxxx

I did find it a bit unlikely anyone could take offence at 'straight'. There must be more than this for people to worry about. I wonder which antonym of 'gay' could be a positive term? Sometimes this stuff gets silly. You mustn't call a bin liner a black bag, even though it's a perfect description. But 'white elephant' with its negative connotations is apparently fine.
